Africa’s Leading Blockchain and Cryptocurrency Event Organisers Since 2015
Bitcoin Events was founded by Sonya Kuhnel and Theo Sauls in 2014 who are early adopters of cryptocurrencies and passionate about the exciting future of blockchain technology and its use-cases in addressing some of Africa’s biggest challenges such as financial inclusion, economic development and creation of job opportunities.
Bitcoin Events was established to address the lack of education and information available to individuals and organisations in Africa on the opportunities and challenges that blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies offer. Bitcoin Event’s events, workshops and educational meetups provides the opportunity for all to learn, meet and network with individuals and organisations that are building products and services with this technology.
In 2015, Bitcoin Events hosted the inaugural Bitcoin Africa Conference in Cape Town. The event was renamed to the Blockchain Africa Conference and is now in its 9th year.
Bitcoin Events created its second annual event called the Crypto Fest in 2019 which was hosted in Cape Town and its 3rd event, the virtual DeFi Conference hosted in 2020.
Over the past 8 years, we have had the privilege of successfully hosting 15,000+ attendees from 165+ countries. We have had the pleasure of engaging with some of the most prominent and respected individuals and companies in the blockchain space. Our reach is far and wide, and we are committed to further empowering Africa with our world-class events.
Bitcoin Events is the hosts of the annual Blockchain Africa Conferences, Crypto Fest and DeFi Conference.

Since 2015, Bitcoin Events has been hosting the annual Blockchain Africa Conferences, the first of their kind in Africa. The popular conferences have attracted some of the top thought leaders and pioneers in the blockchain and cryptocurrency industries worldwide, including Charles Hoskinson, Founder and CEO of IOHK, Founder of Cardano, and Director of The Bitcoin Project; Sam Bankman-Fried, Founder at Alameda Research, and CEO and Founder of FTX; and Andreas M. Antonopoulos, security and distributed systems expert, coder, entrepreneur and author.
The conference focuses on the opportunities and use cases that blockchain technology presents to both the African continent, and globally.
Over the years, the conference themes have evolved and aligned with the global adoption of blockchain technology: ‘Beyond the Hype’, ‘From Hype to Mainstream’ and most recently ‘Ready for Business?’
The 9th edition of the conference will be hosted as an in-person event in March 2023 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
This is a unique, fun and engaging festival hosted in Cape Town, South Africa for the inaugural edition and virtually since then.
The event brings together game changers, thought leaders, innovators, technologists, entrepreneurs, traders, enthusiasts, private and institutional investors, payment providers, cryptocurrency exchanges and companies and individuals looking at how they can integrate cryptocurrencies into their businesses.
The Crypto Fest hosts global speakers who provide insights into the current state of cryptocurrencies, the future, latest trends, products and services in the industry. The event includes sponsored workshops, debates on hotly contested topics, games, exhibitions, competitions and giveaways.
The aim of the event is to accelerate global adoption of cryptocurrencies, forge the future of the cryptocurrency industry and to explore the many opportunities that exist such as in trading, mining, investment and payments.
The event provides attendees with an immersive experience, plenty of engagement with well-known speakers and thought leaders, fantastic networking opportunities and showcase real-world applications on how this technology is being used globally.
The 4th edition of the event will be hosted as an in-person event in September 2022 in Cape Town, South Africa.
